What is credit card data portability and should I be concerned about it?

Credit Card Data Portability is the ability to port customer credit card information from one payment gateway to another.

When one of your customers signs up for a recurring subscription your card processing company takes a payment and stores that customer’s card details. You may in the future want to use a different card processor if it makes it easier for your customers to pay or they offer you a better deal. Depending on the agreement with the card processor it may be difficult to get them to transfer that card data to your new processor. This is called “processor lock-in”.

Billforward is gateway agnostic so you can use any processor with our platform – but our advice is to ensure you are not locked in.

If you are unsure about what gateway to use please let us know at hello@billforward.io .
